Reading weekend journal posts without jumping to conclusions
How forensic reviewers treat weekend and holiday journal postings during transaction review — signals, not automatic proof of wrongdoing.
Audit committees often treat a weekend timestamp as a smoking gun. In Hong Kong trading businesses that clear Asian and European cut-offs, weekend posts can be ordinary. The forensic question is whether the poster, the amount, and the counterparty make sense together.
What we record
For each material weekend or holiday journal we capture: user ID, authorisation trail, amount, accounts touched, and whether bank movement occurred the same day or later.
Patterns that earn escalation
Clusters of related-party payments posted by a single user outside the approval matrix; reversing entries that erase a weekday posting without narrative; and posts that coincide with deleted invoice PDFs.
Patterns that often clear
Automated FX revaluations, payroll accruals scheduled by the system calendar, and month-end closes run by shared service centres in other time zones.
A findings letter should say which weekend posts were tested and which cleared — not merely that “anomalies exist.” That discipline is part of how we run forensic transaction review.
